There’s a little-known secret among office equipment manufacturers and dealers. It may not seem like a very important thing, but it’s definitely good information to know. It has to do with a machine’s features and specification ratings. What I mean by this is most new office machines,
including paper shredders, binding machines, paper cutters, and so on, come with a capacity rating or number that indicates what kind of volume it can produce (or destroy in the case of a paper shredder).
For example, office-grade paper shredders, of the strip cut variety, typically shred from 10-20 sheets at a time, depending on the model. The next part is where some confusion comes into the picture. Most office machine manufacturers will then give a new paper shredder, fresh off the assembly line, a capacity rating — the number of sheets you can insert into the shred feeder at a time.
We have found that some vendors tend to overstate the capabilities of their equipment, and that’s where possible customer complaints come into play. It’s not a question of ethics here. We have leared through experience that yes, most of these machines can do the stated amount in the specifications, under ideal conditions. However, those amounts tend to push the limits of the moving parts, and cut down on the longevity of a machine.
Office Zone has attempted to remedy this situation by publishing a different set of ratings for most machines. What this means is, we’ve taken the manufacturer’s number and trimmed it down slightly, just to be on the safe side. That’s why you may see lower numbers on our site when compared with some of our competitors. For more information on office machine ratings and other related topics, be sure to contact Office Zone.
