I had a customer call me the other day concerned about a $100 bill he had received. He was convinced that it was a counterfeit note. He also had recently purchased our model ABC-75 Comprehensive Pro Money
Detector. The model ABC-75 comes fully equipped with a ultraviolet (UV) light detector, watermark verification window, magnetic (MG) detection device, and a magnifying lens for micro-printing verification.
This machine has most of the basic counterfeit detection measures you need to identify a fake bill. The customer was misinformed about some key facts regarding counterfeit detection. He thought that a fake bill, when rubbed across the magnetic detection sensor, would make the alarm sound. However, just the opposite is true. The magnetic detector will let you know if the ink printed on the note has metal in it. A legitimate bill has special ink mixed with traces of metal. This ink is only used by the government.
The customer had a second misunderstanding about the paper the note was printed on. He was told that if you took a counterfeit detection pen an drew a line on it, the line would fade indicating a phony note. Once again, just the opposite is true. The ink will fade on a legitimate bill.
The third point of concern with this customer was the security thread embedded into the note. He was completely unaware of its purpose. Larger bills, including 100’s, 50’s, and 20’s, have a clear polyester thread embedded vertically in the paper. The thread is printed with the denomination of the note, and is visible when you hold it up to a light source. Each denomination has a unique thread position, and glows a unique color under UV light (source: www.secretservice.gov , www.moneyfactory.gov).
So, it turns out that our customer had a perfectly legitimate $100 bill. He could finally breathe easy knowing the bank would accept the deposit of the note. For more information on counterfeit detection, be sure to visit Office Zone’s Money Counter Guide today.
